The Information You Need to Know On
How To Produce Your Own Demo CD/Track FOR FREE
The very first thing you need to understand is the basic structure of a song. A song can
be
broken down into 4 major parts:
Lyrics, Melody Lines, Beat/Instrumental, and Vocal
The order of which gets created first is not fixed
The Old Way:
The traditional way of song writing starts with the Melody Writer coming up with the
melody lines, and then a Lyricist completes the theme by filling in words. At this point,
a song already exists. Instrumentalists will catalyze the mood by writing music to
back up all the lines. Finally a Vocalist presents the song to the public by singing it.
The New Way:
Since the introduction of elctronic composition, music has become easier and easier to
make. Today artists enjoy the benefit of something called Royalty Free Music, which
means that you can purchase or lease a piece of instrumental beat and write songs on
top of it to make demos. The original producer of the instrumental beat will not collect
any royalty from what you make as they have licensed you nonexclusive rights to use it
in the first place.
What Most People Don't Know:
What most people don't realize is that the Royalty Free Beats have no commercial
value to you if you want to be signed to a record label, they will have to REMAKE the
beat for your chosen song before they can sell it. Why? Because your beat here is NOT
exclusively YOURS! Tens and thousands of other recording artists may have used the
same beat for their demos. This creates a whole lot of potential legal threats.
What A Demo Really Is:
A demo version or demo of a song (shortened from the word "demonstration") is one
recorded FOR REFERENCE rather than for RELEASE. It is a way for artists to approximate
their ideas and provide an example of those ideas to record labels. So why would you
need ANY license to use ANY beat just to get inspired on your own ideas?
The Trick Is:
You are allowed to use any FREE beats you can find to help you produce a Demo CD as
long you don't release it to the public as your own. So if you are into one specific artist
style, just take his/her beat and start writing your own songs on top of it.
But remember that if you are using a beat from an established artist, DO NOT copy the
original melody lines or lyrics, and you ALWAYS need to state the original artist's name
somewhere on your Demo CD.
